About
Ed Wren is a pianist, songwriter, and composer based in London known for his distinctively soulful and melodic musical approach. Drawing inspiration from the classic singer-songwriter tradition and Motown through Steely Dan to John Mayer and beyond, Ed brings his signature contemporary sound to every performance and collaboration. He has performed at top London music venues such as Pizza Express, The Spice of Life, and Green Note as well as at countless grassroots venues both in the capital and across the UK.
Ed is currently working on a series of singles with his new band which will be released in 2026. His original music achieves a fresh take on an array of 70s influences from Carole King to Andrew Gold crossed with the the crisp, guitar-driven sound world of the John Mayer Trio. Ed’s lyrics address themes such as solitude, loneliness, freedom, and belonging in a distinctively philosophical style.
Ed is a highly skilled and versatile musician with many years’ practical experience in performing, composing and arranging, and teaching. He has accompanied singers for showcases and concerts, appeared as a side person for small jazz combos and big bands, and worked as a session musician. He is recording piano this year for jazz guitarist Rory Mann’s debut album and for an album of songs composed by the Slovakian/Iranian cellist and singer-songwriter Hoda Jahanpour. He continues to perform regularly with his longstanding musical partner, the British jazz vocalist Maddie Martin, with whom he has developed an extensive repertoire of arrangements of standards, 70s classics, and contemporary neo-soul songs. He is also currently composing a collection of solo piano pieces aimed at the intermediate pianist.
Ed completed his musical training at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Music and holds an ATCL diploma in classical piano. Aside from music he has an active interest in literature, history, and philosophy, and he completed graduate studies in History at Bristol University and Cambridge University.
